Study experience at CUHK

Learning in the program was inspiring, especially with top-notch professors whose works I had already been reading when I was still a master’s student. It was also motivating to interact with my peers in the program, who brought their own experiences and worldviews in every class discussion or extra-curricular activity. I also fondly remember the breathtakingly beautiful campus that provided a safe space for our learning.

My academic career

The School challenged me to become a better scholar by encouraging me, and with generous funding, to do research, present my work in conferences, and to publish these works. My learnings in my classes equipped me with skills in theorizing and designing methodologies to be able to do quality research. My exposure to many seminars, workshops, and conferences opened me to a network of other scholars and academics, as well as to greater curiosity and creativity in doing research.

Studying in our School was very fun and intellectually stimulating. In addition to the required coursework, I benefited a lot from the C-seminars and reading clubs held at C-Center. It is a supportive community that encourages you to explore brave ideas.

My academic career

The PhD programme was demanding and yet rewarding. It equipped me with critical thinking skills and analytical tools to make sense of China and the world. My field trip to Africa would not be possible without the generous support from our School. The global perspectives I gained there greatly shaped my academic career.

I benefited tremendously from my study at the School with its well-structured curriculum, the internationalization and the rich research expertise of the faculty. I enjoyed and learned from professors and classmates to collaborate on various research projects with mutual support. Mentorships and friendships continue even after my graduation.

I received rigorous research training, which helped build my research taste and academic interests in our School. The camaraderie of the tennis team and serene jogs by Pak Shek Kok beach provided cherished breaks, while the well-stocked library and Cantonese cuisine added to my enriching experience.

Study experience at CUHK

I was admitted to the PhD in Communication program at The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s School of Journalism and Communication in 2014, under the supervision of Prof. Francis Lee. My time at CUHK ranks among the best experiences of my life. It was enriching, filled with knowledge from first-class and rigorous scholars, research seminars, classes, talks, debates, and stimulating discussions. I was fortunate to be surrounded by great peers, and of course, the stunning natural scenery of mountains and seas around our campus.

My academic career

My PhD training covered a broad spectrum, from qualitative and quantitative methodologies to theoretical and empirical studies, including advanced statistical and computational approaches. I learned cutting-edge theories and methods from scholars trained in rigorous social scientific paradigms. Additionally, my supervisor and faculty supported my pursuit of interdisciplinary research in computational social science, instilling a rigorous, theory-driven, and critically minded approach that has greatly benefited me.
