My PhD journey at CUHK has been a precious chapter of my life, thanks to its open and vibrant academic atmosphere. I am fortunate to have a wonderful cohort—we learn and grow together, while also sharing great moments outside of academics. The professors and faculty are supportive, encouraging, and deeply respectful of their students. I will always remember the gentle breeze from the beautiful Tolo Harbour—it carries the scent of freedom!

CUHK marked the starting point of my academic journey, where I systematically explored various theories, learned diverse research methods, discovered my own research interests, and published my first academic papers. It provided me with a solid foundation for conducting research. More importantly, I learned from professors what it means to embrace scholarship as a lifelong career. Though I still face many pressures as a young scholar, I believe the experience at CUHK has equipped me to navigate through uncertainties with confidence and resilience.

The PhD study experience at CUHK was one of the most memorable and valuable periods of my life. It provided me with rigorous research training and fostered an open-minded perspective on our field. More importantly, I was surrounded by excellent scholars and warmly supported by my peers. Of course, there were challenges, such as the pressures of studying and publishing during the PhD years, but I believe these became my motivation to push myself further.

My academic experience in our school’s PhD program provided me with rigorous training in research methodologies and significantly expanded my understanding of various research paradigms and topics. Through this program, I gained exposure to the latest theoretical advancements in communication and interdisciplinary fields. Additionally, I greatly valued participating in international academic conferences, where I had the opportunity to interact with leading scholars in our discipline.

Learning in the program was inspiring, especially with top-notch professors whose works I had already been reading when I was still a master’s student. It was also motivating to interact with my peers in the program, who brought their own experiences and worldviews in every class discussion or extra-curricular activity. I also fondly remember the breathtakingly beautiful campus that provided a safe space for our learning.

The School challenged me to become a better scholar by encouraging me, and with generous funding, to do research, present my work in conferences, and to publish these works. My learnings in my classes equipped me with skills in theorizing and designing methodologies to be able to do quality research. My exposure to many seminars, workshops, and conferences opened me to a network of other scholars and academics, as well as to greater curiosity and creativity in doing research.

Studying in our School was very fun and intellectually stimulating. In addition to the required coursework, I benefited a lot from the C-seminars and reading clubs held at C-Center. It is a supportive community that encourages you to explore brave ideas.

The PhD programme was demanding and yet rewarding. It equipped me with critical thinking skills and analytical tools to make sense of China and the world. My field trip to Africa would not be possible without the generous support from our School. The global perspectives I gained there greatly shaped my academic career.

The camaraderie of the tennis team and serene jogs by Pak Shek Kok beach provided cherished breaks, while the well-stocked library and Cantonese cuisine added to my enriching experience.

Now working in academia, I am grateful for how our school prepared me by fostering global academic perspectives, nurturing curiosity in Chinese and Asian social phenomena, enhancing my research and teaching abilities, and heightening my awareness of psychological resilience and physical fitness.

I was admitted to the PhD in Communication program at The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s School of Journalism and Communication in 2014, under the supervision of Prof. Francis Lee. My time at CUHK ranks among the best experiences of my life. It was enriching, filled with knowledge from first-class and rigorous scholars, research seminars, classes, talks, debates, and stimulating discussions. I was fortunate to be surrounded by great peers, and of course, the stunning natural scenery of mountains and seas around our campus.

My PhD training covered a broad spectrum, from qualitative and quantitative methodologies to theoretical and empirical studies, including advanced statistical and computational approaches. I learned cutting-edge theories and methods from scholars trained in rigorous social scientific paradigms. Additionally, my supervisor and faculty supported my pursuit of interdisciplinary research in computational social science, instilling a rigorous, theory-driven, and critically minded approach that has greatly benefited me.
